Fans of sparse, haunting acoustic work and storytelling vocals will find a lot to dig on this release by Jennifer Berezan. With guest appearances by Bruce Cockburn and Indigo Girl Emily Saliers—and spot-on accompaniment from Nina Gerber on slide guitar and Mike Marshall on mandolin and mandocello—the record runs the gamut from sensitive fingerpicking on “Take Me to the Mountain” to spooky single-note lines on “Land of the Hungry Ghost.” Berezan gets great acoustic tones throughout and is refreshingly content to let guitar melody notes sit out there almost naked, imparting an honesty to her 6-string parts that too many artists produce or overdub into oblivion. This record is mellow but never sleepy. Nice.
